The Chachapoyas, known as the men who dwell among the clouds, developed between 800 A.D. and 1570 A.D. on the northeastern slope of the Andes mountain range of Peru, between 2000 and 3000 thousand meters above sea level.

This region that is quite humid due to the continuous rains, which consists of swamps, thick vegetation, and which is permanently covered by a dense fog, offers a perfect balance between archaeology, nature and living cultures.

Impressive waterfalls such as Gocta slide down endless cliffs and we find mausoleums such as Revash, or the sarcophagi of Karajía, unique in the entire continent. In this place we are always accompanied by the feeling of touring a region where we are pioneers, because tourism, which ends up invading everything, has not yet landed en masse here.

We present our new program: “Chachapoyas, The Lost Kingdom” and invite you to discover this wonderful destination that is surely the best kept secret in Peru.

*For preventive maintenance, during some days of the year, the Cable Car does not provide service on certain scheduled dates. Please check the operating calendar. In these cases, the cable car will be replaced by a vehicle transfer.

NOTE: Most local museums are not open on Mondays.

TOUR DETAILS:

Day 1: JAEN / CHACHAPOYAS

Upon arrival in the city of Jaén, our staff will be waiting for you to transfer you from the airport to the city of Chachapoyas. Overnight in Chachapoyas.

Day 2: VISIT TO KUELAP FORTRESS + MACRO RUINS

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning we will begin our excursion to Kuelap, the lost city of the Chachapoyas. On the way we will make a stop to have a panoramic view of the Macro Archaeological Complex, known as “Macro Towers” for its architectural feature, which is located on the slope of a hill in front of the Utcubamba River. From there we will move to Tingo, the starting point of the cable car that will transport us to the place called La Malca, from where we will start a short walk until we reach the famous Kuélap Fortress, built on the top of Cerro Barreta (at 3000 meters above sea level). The place surrounded by beautiful landscapes that at first glance seems impenetrable since it is covered with colossal walls and precipices on three of its four sides. Kuélap contains three platforms whose interior has circular buildings decorated with friezes in the shape of diamonds and zigzags and its complex interior architecture evidences its function as a well-organized population complex. Along with the landscape that surrounds it, the natural spectacle offered by the place is unforgettable. During the guided tour we will get to know the “Upper Town” and the “Lower Town”, their ceremonial enclosures, the famous tower, the main temple and its circular and rectangular rooms.

After the visit we will take the cable car back to the town of Tingo. Lunch included.

Day 3: EXCURSIÓN A LA CATARATA GOCTA

Breakfast at the hotel. This day we will transfer to the picturesque town of Cocachimba. From there we will start our walking tour of approximately two hours, towards the Gocta Waterfall; On the way we will be able to enjoy the great diversity of flora and fauna that inhabits this environment. Known locally as “La Chorrera”, the Gocta Waterfall is a waterfall that measures 771 meters high and is considered among the highest in the world. It is the perfect habitat for toucans, monkeys, pumas and our national bird, “The of the rock” (Rupicola peruviana). This natural wonder is located in an extensive forest covered in mist, in the surroundings of which there are about twenty waterfalls. The area offers a beautiful combination of geography and history that makes it a magical place. After our excursion we will return to Cocachimba.

Day 4: CHACHAPOYAS / JAÉN

Breakfast at the hotel. At the coordinated time we will transfer you back to Jaén airport to continue with your itinerary.       (B.)

THE PROGRAM DOES NOT INCLUDE:

  • All rates are per person, are expressed in US dollars and apply only to foreign passengers or Peruvians not resident in Peru.
  • The rates do not apply to residents with a stay of more than 60 days, or for corporate passengers (from 4 nights to more in Lima).
  • Prices are subject to change without notice and to the General Conditions of Peru A Travel.
  • Reservation requests must include the full name of each passenger, nationality, passport number, age and date of birth.
  • If the hotels suggested for this program are not available at the time of confirmation, our team will offer similar alternatives, previous coordination.
  • The rates of the programs include transfers and pick-ups for excursions, exclusively to and from hotels located in central areas of the touristic neighbourhoods, and with easy access for the vehicles. If the client requests accommodation in different areas, an extra charge on the value of the program must be considered.
  • Peru A Travel reserves the right to alter the itinerary at any time, especially, if necessary, to ensure the comfort and safety of the passengers.
  • For all reservations the standard check-in time applies, and early arrival at a destination does not guarantee that hotel rooms are available, unless you wish to pay for additional nights of accommodation to ensure immediate access to rooms.
  • Check-in and check-out schedules may vary according to the policies of each hotel, usually being the check-in time between 13:00 hours and 15:00 hours, and the check-out time between 09:00 hours and 10:00 hours.
  • All our accommodation rates include breakfast. The breakfasts have schedules assigned according to the policies of each hotel, being generally between 06:00 and 10:00 hours. In case the passenger(s) has(have) a transfer or leave before the assigned hours, they will lose this benefit, not being able to be compensated in another hotel, or requesting any refund. Room service or box breakfast services have an additional cost and do not compensate for breakfast that cannot be served.
  • For reservations that include train service, seats are assigned according to car availability. Seating can only be arranged after tickets have been issued.
