During the journey, we will visit the Ninamarca Pre-Inca Tombs, known as “Chullpas” and then continue towards Paucartambo, a typical colonial town where we will make a brief stop and continue ascending to the Acjanacu pass of 3.850 m.a.s.l. From there, we will begin the descent through the cloudy forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and the cock of the rock, orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc.

Upon arriving at our destination, we will accommodate on the premises of Tambo “San Pedro”.

DAY 2 - SAN PEDRO – PILCOPATA – ERIKA

Today we will get up very early to see the courtship dance of the Cock of the Rock, the national bird of Peru. After breakfast, we will walk on the trails and road near San Pedro, in order to have the opportunity of watching beautiful birds of the altitudes region.

We will continue our journey by bus crossing the high forest, arriving later to the town of Pilcopata *, and then continue to the port of Atalaya. Once our motorboat is loaded with the necessary equipment for the tour, we will begin our descent down the river whilst watching the enormous diversity of existing birds, herons, vultures, cormorants, etc. Arriving at the beach, we will stay at Erika Lodge, where we will spend the next 2 nights. During the afternoon, we will do some hiking along the trails to recognize the environment and then rest.

*Optional: 3 hours for rowing (levels II and III) along Kosñipata and Alto Madre de Dios rivers.

DAY 3 - PARROTS CLAY LICK (COLLPA)

After breakfast, we will board our boat to sail for about ten minutes to the clay lick (wall of clay in the river) where different species of parrots, as the head blue parrot, white eyed parakeet, macaw (Ara militaris ), among others, fly down to extract minerals for their diet each morning. All together, they provide an unforgettable show of colourful wildlife. After this activity, we will board our boat to start a short walk.
