Welcome in Puerto Maldonado and experience the charm of the jungle as you take a 45-minute drive along the Madre de Dios River, to reach Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica.
After a short introduction, enjoy a nice lunch with ingredients from the region. Take a nap, share a pleasant moment with a refreshing tea and get ready for the afternoon excursion.
After meeting your Inkaterra Explorer guide, choose from the several excursions available at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica. On your first day, we recommend for you to enter the jungle through a guided walk along the Trochas System in the natural area of Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, where you will discover the wonderful Amazon Basin. This excursion offers an excellent introduction to the jungle ecosystem going through the impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco and the strangely beautiful Strangler Ficus, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and exotic insects.
We recommend that for the first night you take the Rio de Noche excursion – a guided boat ride done in the afternoon, sailing through the Madre de Dios River. Witness the transformation from a diurnal world to a nocturnal one: birds and other diurnal animals give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy the nature around you, keep an eye out for the appearance of nightjars, owls, ronsocos, and up to three different species of alligators.
In the afternoon, enjoy dinner served in the main dining room, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. After dinner, you can choose to go to your cabin early, or share your jungle life experiences with other guests and Inkaterra Explorer guides, while listening to the intriguing sounds of the Amazon during the night. (L.D.)
Sleep in or get up early – the choice is yours. Breakfast starts very early for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature to the fullest. Enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
During the morning, you can take the excursion to Lake Sandoval in the Tambopata National Reserve. Sail in a wooden canoe across a lake, home to many endangered species such as the giant river otter, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, and cocked-necked turtles. Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica for lunch.
After lunch, consider visiting the Inkaterra Canopy. As you climb the first tower, 29 meters above the forest floor, you will begin your encounter with the species that inhabit the treetops. You’ll literally walk through the rainforest for more than a quarter of a mile, on a network of bridges that connect eight observation decks.
During this two-hour expedition tour, keep an eye out for colorful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, sloths, and more. If you wish, you can extend your excursion to appreciate the sunset on one of the towers. Once at the lodge, enjoy the nature presentation at the Eco Center and Happy Hour. Dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. (B.L.D.)
Enjoy a walk along the Quebrada Gamitana which is a 25-minute boat ride away from the lodge. Explore the jungle for an hour and a half, along the winding Quebrada Gamitana, home to piranhas, caimans, turtles and birds, until you reach the Sanipanga stop. Cruise along the river appreciating the abundant flora and fauna of the rainforest. You will return to the Gamitana model farm for a short guided tour where you will learn more about an Amazon model farm. Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica to enjoy your lunch.
After lunch, enjoy the excursion to Hacienda Concepción, with the possibility to see more than 200 different species of plants, and to learn about the current uses and benefits of the local flora. Next, take a 30-minute canoe trip in search of turtles, chota, goats, and exotic herons.
Then, take the Night Jungle excursion through the trails of the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, in an excursion of approximately 2 hours. Dive into the secondary forest and experience the mystery of animal activity that awakens in the jungle at sunset. Listen to the nocturnal sounds of the forest and discover species that only emerge in the dark of night. Return to the lodge. (B.L.D.)
Enjoy the excursion to the Hacienda Concepcion, built on an old cocoa and rubber plantation on the grounds of what was the “Fundo Concepción”, a medical center of the Catholic mission during the 50s. Until 1976, this property also functioned as an ecological research and training center for the local community, within 819 hectares of natural forest nestled in a natural lake. Hacienda Concepción is home to diverse ecosystems, tropical plants, and wild animals. During your tour, you will learn about the history and visit the remains of a ship called Fitzcarrald.
Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica to enjoy your lunch. After lunch, take the Aguajales excursion, where you can visit an interesting aguajales system along a 200-meter-long bridge, located over the jungle swamps. Recognize the transition of the ecosystem from secondary forest to aguajales and have the opportunity to observe different species of amphibians, snakes, birds and mammals. Learn about the different fruits and surrounding flora, their role in the swamp ecosystem, and their multiple uses and benefits. Return to the lodge. (B.L.D.)
Enjoy a full breakfast before you leave. A 45-minute return boat ride across the Madre de Dios River will take you to Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll visit the Casa de las Mariposas. Peru has the largest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3700 known species. Many of these can be seen in the Butterfly House, a sample of the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects. (B.)
