Day 2: EXCURSION TO THE LLANGANUCO LAGOON

Pick-up from your hotel. We start our tour and get to a village called Anta, that offers a great view of the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range. Then we continue to Carhuaz, famous for its delicious, traditional homemade ice-cream. From here we will continue to the abandoned city of Yungay and its Campo Santo, created by a huge earthquake that occurred in 1970. The visit of this site will last for about 45 minutes. Then, we will turn 27 km, rising to the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range to reach the beautiful Llanganuco lagoon, located at 3.850 m.a.s.l. and surrounded by beautiful Quenuales. In this place will have direct contact with nature and the purity of its waters.

The Llanganunco lagoon is part of the Huascaran National Park and the Huascaran Biosphere Reserve. The region is almost unrivalled in its natural beauty and unspoiled environment.

Llanganuco Lagoon (which is comprised of two lagoons: the Warmicocha or female lagoon and the Orcococha or male lagoon) are formed by the thawing of the ice from two of the most emblematic mountains in Ancash: the Huascaran and the Huandoy.

Here you will have some time to take a walk around the lake or go on a slow chilled boat ride, or take a little horseback ride. You will also be able to spot a some endemic birds.

On the way back we will make a couple of stops; First in Caraz and then in Huaylas Alley, where you can find nice and cheap souvenirs to take home. We will be back in Huaraz at around 19.00 hs. approx. Typical lunch included.

Day 3: TOUR TO CHAVIN OF HUANTAR

Breakfast at the hotel.

Early departure to one of the most important archaeological sites in the formative north of Peru. Chavin is one of the most ancient civilizations of America. The Archaeological center is located at 3200m of altitude, constructed around 1500 ac. It is considered as the political/religious center of the culture that preached in large scale about their art and culture. This site was declared World Heritage in 1985

Chavin is composed of a truncated pyramid-shaped structure that presents a complex network of roads and interior galleries only illuminated by light beams that penetrate through strategically arranged ducts.

In this place you will appreciate the impressive “Lanzón”, this is a carved, 4.5m high lithic sculpture in which an anthropomorphic divinity is observed, the Gallery of the labyrinths, on the walls of the main temple you can see a series of key heads, sculptural lumps that apparently officiated as mythological guardians of the temple.

During the tour we will visit the Querococha Lagoon, declared by Unesco a Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and Natural Heritage of Humanity in 1985; and Cahuish Tunnel, which at 4,178 meters above sea level crosses the Cordillera Blanca, joining the Callejón de Huaylas with the Callejón de Conchucos.

Lunch and return to Huaraz.
