PAT 0181 - CHAN CHAN & HUACAS OF THE SUN AND THE MOON

Transfer to the airport or ground station to begin the trip to Trujillo. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to the hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel. This day we will realize a tour through the city. First, we will visit the Colonial Center, founded in 1534, which displays colonial architecture in its churches, residences and palaces typically adorned with balconies. We will visit the Main Square, Calonge Urquiaga House, the La Merced church, the Emanicipation House, The Iturregui Palace and small square El Recreo.

Then, we will visit the stunning pyramids of the Sun and the Moon huacas, which are important Moche archaeological complexes (100 – 600/ 800 A.D), their main attractive is represented by two pyramids and their incredible polychromatic reliefs.

The Sun huaca, is the biggest one, and it is built in adobe over a rectangular base that displays an administrative building, consistent of a 43-meter high step pyramid. This huaca was the political-administrative center for this culture, and served as a home to the high Moche class. The complex was plastered with colored clay. In the front side we can find the huaca de la Luna (Moon huaca), composed of 6 overlapped terraces, giving a total height of 20 meters. It has a square base of 87 meters on the side and a height of 21 meters. Its upper platform was decorated with human figures. Thanks to the restoration that has taken place through the course of several years, we can appreciate magnificent polychromatic reliefs, mainly the effigy of the god Ai Apaec.

At the indicated time we will begin our excursion to Huaca of the dragon and then we will visit the museum and the largest mud city in the world: “Chan Chan”.

The purpose of this tour is to visit the ancient citadel of Chan-Chan (declared Cultural Patrimony of Mankind), it is the biggest mud city existing in the planet, the old capital of the Chimú kingdom (1000-1470 A.D.), a culture which descends from the Mochicas (Lord of Sipan).

During out tour we will visit the monumental zone and the entry point of the Tschudi Palace, which shows the apogee and splendor of one of the most advanced civilizations of its time in its 11.5 hectares of extension through the management of its spaces, the exquisite beauty of its friezes and the solidity of its constructions.
